Editorial engagement session featuring a couple strolling hand-in-hand through Edinburgh’s historic streets

An Editorial Engagement Session in Edinburgh

Historic Charm,
Natural Chemistry
and Effortless Style

Romantic engagement session in Edinburgh’s historic Old Town with cobbled streets and charming architecture

Edinburgh’s historic streets, soft overcast light, and the effortless style of Gaby and Lasse made for the perfect editorial engagement session. As part of Photography Farm’s Thrive Conference, I had the chance to photograph this stunning couple, capturing their connection in a way that felt cinematic, intimate, and undeniably stylish.

A Walk Through Edinburgh’s Old Streets

We began our session on Queen Street, moving towards Stockbridge, winding through secluded cobbled lanes and historic archways. The Georgian architecture and quiet streets gave the shoot a timeless, almost film-like quality – exactly the kind of setting that allows for both documentary-style storytelling and high-fashion editorial moments.

Effortless Style Meets Editorial Storytelling

Paloma Wool set the tone for the entire session: effortless, modern, and artfully understated. With soft tailoring and unique textures, Gaby’s outfit moved beautifully as she and Lasse walked through the city, that created an organic, fashion-forward feel to the images. I always strive to create a space where my couples feel completely at ease in front of the camera, and with these two, it was effortless. There was no need for over-direction; instead, I let them simply be, using their natural chemistry as the foundation for each shot.

Playing with Light & Composition

The cloudy Edinburgh sky gave us a soft, diffused light—the kind that enhances every detail and makes skin tones glow. One of my favourite moments was using a tunnel archway to create depth and contrast, highlighting the couple against the moody backdrop. In other shots, they framed themselves within the winding cobbled streets, allowing the historic surroundings to add texture and narrative to each scene. Finding ways to weave the environment into my storytelling is something I love about photography – using light, shadow, and composition to enhance not just how the moment looks, but how it feels.

Editorial Meets Documentary

What made this session so special was its balance between editorial precision and documentary storytelling. Gaby and Lasse weren’t posed in a rigid way; instead, I focused on capturing their natural interactions, subtle movements, and quiet moments. It was about crafting imagery that felt stylish yet deeply personal – a perfect blend of cinematic and authentic. My approach is always to observe and guide where needed, but ultimately, I want my couples to see their real selves reflected back in the images.

Why Edinburgh is the Perfect Backdrop

There’s something about Edinburgh that makes it an incredible setting for engagement photography. Whether it’s the grand Georgian townhouses, the hidden alleyways, or the way the light shifts through the city’s architecture, it offers an unparalleled mix of elegance and intimacy. I’ve always been drawn to locations that have their own stories to tell, and Edinburgh never fails to add a layer of depth and romance to my work.

If you’re dreaming of an engagement session that feels effortlessly cool, refined, and uniquely you, Edinburgh is the place. And if you want an editorial, documentary-style approach to your session, I’d love to help you bring that vision to life.
